The core HR metrics worth tracking, how to calculate them, and how to turn people data into decisions leadership will act on.
Calculate turnover as leavers over a period divided by average headcount for that period. Trend it over time and segment it, because an overall figure can hide a serious problem in one team or among a critical group of specialists.
Absence, leave and engagement
Absence rates, particularly unplanned sickness absence, are worth monitoring both for cost and as a wellbeing signal. In Ireland this also intersects with the statutory sick-leave scheme, so accurate records matter for compliance as well as insight. Track leave balances and utilisation to manage liabilities and spot burnout risk.
A modern HRIS produces these metrics automatically from live data, removing the manual spreadsheet grind and the errors that come with it. That frees the people team to spend their time interpreting the numbers and influencing decisions, which is where HR adds the most value.
