In HR technology terms, an open API means that your HRIS publishes a documented, accessible interface that other systems can use to read or write data without manual exports or complex custom builds. Think of it as a standardised socket that allows any compatible plug, whether a payroll system, an LMS, or a business intelligence tool, to connect and exchange data reliably.

Ask for reference customers who have built integrations using the API and speak to them about their experience. A vendor who cannot answer these questions clearly is unlikely to have a mature integration capability.
