An Application Programming Interface (API) is a set of defined methods that allows one software application to communicate with another. In HR technology terms, an open API means that your HRIS publishes a documented, accessible interface that other systems can use to read or write data without manual exports or complex custom builds. Think of it as a standardised socket that allows any compatible plug, whether a payroll system, an LMS, or a business intelligence tool, to connect and exchange data reliably.
Waarom open APIs belangrijk zijn voor HR
HR-technologie-ecosystemen bestaan zelden uit één leverancier: de meeste organisaties gebruiken een kern-HRIS naast gespecialiseerde tools voor salarisadministratie, werving, leren en welzijn. Zonder een open API, vereist het koppelen van deze systemen dure maatwerkintegraties of handmatige gegevensoverdrachten. Met een dergelijke oplossing kunnen uw ontwikkelaars of uw implementatiepartner tools snel en betrouwbaar verbinden, en zit u niet vast aan de suite van één leverancier. Een HRIS met een goed gedocumenteerde open API stelt u ook in staat om aangepaste rapportage of workflowautomatisering op te bouwen met behulp van interne of externe ontwikkelresources.
Vragen om leveranciers te stellen over hun API
Ask whether the API is RESTful (the modern standard), whether it is documented publicly, what rate limits apply, whether webhook support is included (for real-time event notifications rather than polling), and whether all core data objects, including employees, absences, documents, and org-chart data, are accessible via the API. Ask for reference customers who have built integrations using the API and speak to them about their experience. A vendor who cannot answer these questions clearly is unlikely to have a mature integration capability.
