The approach suits organisations that run complex projects or serve multiple markets, allowing specialists to be shared flexibly across initiatives. It can improve collaboration and responsiveness compared with rigid silos.
The trade-off is complexity: competing priorities between managers, unclear accountability and heavier coordination. Clear role definitions, agreed decision rights and an accurate org chart that reflects dual lines are essential to make a matrix work.
