Sabbatical
An extended period of leave, often for rest, study or personal projects, with a right to return.
A sabbatical is an extended, agreed period of leave from work โ commonly a few weeks to several months โ during which the employee steps away while retaining the right to return to their role. It may be used for rest, study, travel, volunteering or personal projects.
Sabbaticals are not a statutory entitlement in Ireland or the UK; they are offered at the employer's discretion, often as a reward for long service or as a wellbeing and retention measure. They may be paid, partly paid or unpaid depending on policy.
A clear sabbatical policy should set eligibility, duration, pay, the effect on benefits and service, and the arrangements for return. Handled well, sabbaticals help retain valued people and reduce burnout without a permanent loss of talent.
