Reasonable Accommodation
Adjustments enabling a person with a disability to work, unless they cause disproportionate burden.
Reasonable accommodation is the obligation on employers to make appropriate adjustments so that a person with a disability can access, perform and progress in employment on an equal footing, unless doing so would impose a disproportionate burden.
Accommodations might include modified equipment, adjusted duties or hours, changes to premises, or altered recruitment and assessment methods. What is reasonable depends on the specific role, the individual's needs and the resources of the employer.
In Ireland the duty arises under the Employment Equality Acts, mirroring the EU Employment Equality Directive, and applies from recruitment through to daily work. Engaging openly with the employee to identify workable adjustments is central to meeting the obligation.
