An organisational chart, or org chart, is a diagram showing how roles relate to one another through reporting lines. At a glance it reveals who reports to whom, how teams are grouped and how span of control is distributed.
Beyond a static diagram, a live org chart maintained within HR software becomes a practical tool: it helps with headcount planning, identifies vacancies, supports reorganisations and gives new starters a quick orientation to the business.
Keeping the chart accurate depends on tidy underlying data — job titles, managers and departments — so it is most reliable when generated automatically from the HR system rather than redrawn by hand.
