What's New and What's Coming

Employment law in Ireland is evolving rapidly. These are the compliance obligations currently in effect or being introduced.

Compliance Deadline

Gender Pay Gap Reporting: 50+ Employee Threshold

From 2025-2026, employers with 50 or more employees must publish annual gender pay gap reports covering mean and median gaps across hourly pay, bonus pay, and benefits. Reports must be published on the company website and notified to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC).

Phased Increase

Statutory Sick Pay Entitlement Increases

Ireland's statutory sick pay entitlement continues to increase under the Sick Leave Act 2022. Employers must track the current entitlement for each leave year and ensure payroll reflects the correct statutory sick pay rate of 70% of normal wages, capped at €110 per day.

New Scheme

Pension Auto-Enrolment (AERSS) Launch

Ireland's Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System (AERSS) is scheduled to launch in 2025-2026. Employees aged 23-60 earning over €20,000 who are not in a workplace pension will be auto-enrolled. Employer and employee contributions start at 1.5% each and rise over time. Employers should review payroll systems and communicate the scheme to employees.

Ongoing

Right to Request Remote Working

Under the Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2023, employees have the right to request flexible and remote working arrangements. Employers must consider requests in good faith and provide written reasons for any refusal. BambooHR's flexible working module helps HR teams manage, document, and respond to requests within the required timeframe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current minimum wage in Ireland?+
The national minimum wage in Ireland is €13.50 per hour (effective January 2025 following the Low Pay Commission recommendation). The rate is reviewed annually. Employees under 20 may be paid reduced rates. From January 2026, the rate will be reviewed again by the Low Pay Commission.
How many days statutory sick pay are employees entitled to in Ireland?+
Since January 2024, employees are entitled to 5 days of statutory sick pay per year at 70% of normal wages (capped at €110 per day). This is being phased up: the entitlement increased to 5 days in 2024, and further increases are planned under the Sick Leave Act 2022. Employers should check the current rate with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
Is gender pay gap reporting mandatory for Irish employers?+
Yes. Since 2022, Irish employers with 250 or more employees must publish annual gender pay gap reports. Since 2024, this threshold dropped to 150 employees. From 2025, employers with 50 or more employees are required to report. Reports must be published on the company's website and submitted to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
What is the statutory notice period for employees in Ireland?+
Under the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts 1973-2001, the minimum notice period depends on length of service: 13 weeks to 2 years service gives 1 week; 2 to 5 years gives 2 weeks; 5 to 10 years gives 4 weeks; 10 to 15 years gives 6 weeks; and 15 or more years gives 8 weeks. Contracts may provide for longer notice periods.
How does parental leave work in Ireland?+
Ireland has several types of leave for parents. Parental Leave (unpaid) provides 26 weeks per child (must be taken before the child turns 12). Parent's Leave (paid via Parent's Benefit from the Department of Social Protection) provides 9 weeks per parent per child. Maternity Leave provides 26 weeks paid leave plus 16 weeks unpaid. Paternity Leave provides 2 weeks paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.
What is pension auto-enrolment in Ireland and when does it apply?+
Ireland's Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System (AERSS) is due to launch in 2025-2026. Under AERSS, employees aged 23-60 earning over €20,000 per year who are not already in a workplace pension scheme will be automatically enrolled. Contributions will be phased: starting at 1.5% (employee) and 1.5% (employer) in years 1-3, rising to 6% each at maturity. The State contributes an additional top-up of €1 for every €3 saved by the employee.
What is the Working Time Act in Ireland?+
The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 (as amended) limits working time to an average of 48 hours per week, requires minimum daily rest (11 hours) and weekly rest (24 hours), and mandates paid annual leave. Employees are entitled to a minimum of 4 working weeks of paid annual leave per year (or calculated as 8% of hours worked for part-time workers, subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks).
How does redundancy work in Ireland?+
Under the Redundancy Payments Acts 1967-2022, employees with 2 or more years of continuous service are entitled to statutory redundancy payment. The formula is 2 weeks' pay per year of service plus 1 bonus week, calculated on weekly pay capped at €600 per week. Additional contractual entitlements may apply. The employer must also give the correct statutory notice period.
