Statutory Sick Pay
The minimum sick pay employers must provide by law to eligible employees.
Statutory sick pay is the legally required minimum payment to employees who are absent due to illness. It ensures a baseline of income protection independent of any discretionary occupational scheme.
Ireland has introduced statutory sick pay relatively recently, providing a set number of paid sick days per year at a percentage of normal pay up to a daily cap, with the entitlement scheduled to increase. Eligibility generally requires a minimum period of service and medical certification.
The UK has long operated its own Statutory Sick Pay, paid at a flat weekly rate for a limited number of weeks. Employers in either jurisdiction must apply the correct current rules through payroll and keep accurate absence records.
