Shift Differential
Extra pay for working less desirable shifts, such as nights or weekends.
A shift differential is an additional amount paid to employees for working shifts that are considered less desirable, typically nights, weekends or unsocial hours. It recognises the disruption these patterns cause and helps employers staff them.
The differential is usually a premium on the normal rate — a fixed uplift or a percentage — set out in the contract or a collective agreement. It is distinct from an overtime premium, which relates to hours worked beyond normal rather than the timing of the shift.
In Ireland, shift premiums are largely a matter of contract rather than statute, though night workers have specific protections on hours and health assessments under working-time law. Payroll must apply differentials accurately across varied rosters.
