Garden Leave

A period during notice when an employee stays employed and paid but does not attend work.

Garden leave is where an employer requires an employee who has resigned or been given notice to stay away from work during their notice period, while continuing to be paid and to remain bound by their contract.

It is commonly used to keep departing staff away from sensitive information, clients or colleagues, particularly before they join a competitor.

Because the employee is still employed, duties of loyalty and confidentiality remain in force, and the employer typically keeps the person off systems and out of the office.
