Casual Worker
A worker engaged on an irregular, as-needed basis with no guaranteed hours or ongoing commitment.
A casual worker is engaged to work as and when required, with no guarantee of regular hours and often no obligation on either side to offer or accept work. Zero-hour and if-and-when arrangements fall into this category.
The model gives employers flexibility to meet fluctuating demand, but it carries risks around worker classification, entitlements and predictability of income for the individual.
Employers must apply the correct legal status and entitlements, as regular patterns of work can create stronger rights over time.
