A structured review of an employee's performance, contribution and development over a set period.
An appraisal is a formal conversation, usually annual or biannual, in which a manager and employee review achievements, discuss areas for growth and agree objectives for the period ahead. It is a moment to align individual effort with organisational goals.
Modern practice treats the appraisal as one point in a continuous cycle rather than a stand-alone event. Regular check-ins throughout the year make the formal review less daunting and more accurate.
Well-run appraisals boost engagement and retention; poorly run ones breed cynicism. The difference lies in preparation, honest two-way dialogue and follow-through on what is agreed.
