Why DEI Must Be Embedded in Business Strategy, Not Bolted On
MAY 5, 2026
Inisiatif keberagaman, kesetaraan, dan inklusi yang berada di luar strategi bisnis bersifat rapuh. Seorang CPO menjelaskan mengapa integrasi adalah satu-satunya pendekatan yang bertahan lama.
The problem with standalone DEI programmes
Standalone DEI programmes, those that sit in a separate workstream with their own budget, their own team, and their own set of metrics that are rarely connected to business performance data, are the first thing cut in a budget review. They are also the programmes most likely to generate cynicism: employees who see DEI as a box-ticking exercise rather than a genuine organisational commitment disengage from it and sometimes actively resist it. The fragility is structural: when DEI is separate from the business, it is always at risk of being seen as optional.
Seperti apa integrasi itu
Integration means making DEI criteria part of core business decisions rather than supplementary ones. It means including diversity representation in the KPIs of every hiring manager and people leader, not just the HR team. It means conducting a pay equity audit as part of the annual pay review process, not as an occasional DEI project. It means making psychological safety a criterion in manager performance reviews, because we know that psychological safety is the precondition for diverse teams performing well. Each of these integrations ties DEI to processes that already have accountability and resources.
Mengukur hal yang penting
The DEI metrics that most organisations track, diversity in the overall workforce, representation in the graduate intake, attendance at inclusion events, are largely activity metrics. The metrics that indicate whether DEI is actually working are harder to gather and less flattering: representation at each level of management compared to the general workforce, pay equity by gender and ethnicity within each grade band, promotion rates by demographic group, and psychological safety scores by team segmented by demographic. These metrics require more data capability and more organisational courage, and they are the ones that make the difference.
