Signs that you need dedicated resource include: benefits queries consuming more than half a day per week for a generalist, errors in benefit enrolments causing employee complaints, auto-enrolment assessment cycles being completed manually rather than automatically, and leadership requesting benefits utilisation data that nobody has time to produce.

Look for candidates with experience of your specific benefit types (group risk, flexible benefits, defined contribution pensions) and familiarity with the platforms you use, whether that is a standalone benefits platform, your HRIS, or a combination. Attention to detail and discretion are essential, since benefits administration involves sensitive personal and financial data. Professional qualifications through the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) or the CIPD are a plus.
