How to Reduce Time-to-Hire Without Sacrificing Quality
MAY 20, 2026
A slow hiring process loses great candidates to faster competitors. Here is how to move quickly without cutting corners.
Why time-to-hire matters
The average time-to-hire across all industries sits at around 36 days, but in competitive talent markets, the best candidates are off the market in under two weeks. A lengthy recruitment process signals disorganisation to candidates, damages your employer brand, and costs more in agency fees or extended vacancies. Reducing time-to-hire without compromising on quality requires process redesign, not just moving faster.
Audit your current process
Before making changes, map your current hiring process from job approval to offer acceptance. Identify the longest stages and why they take as long as they do. Common bottlenecks include slow job-approval workflows, too many interview rounds, delayed feedback from hiring managers, and slow reference-checking. Each bottleneck is a solvable process problem.
Pre-approved salary bands and job descriptions
One of the most effective ways to accelerate hiring is to remove approval delays at the start of the process. Maintain a library of pre-approved job descriptions and salary bands for all common roles. When a vacancy opens, the hiring manager can post the role immediately without waiting for HR sign-off on the job description or the Finance team to approve the salary range.
Structured interviews with a defined decision timeline
Replace ad hoc interview formats with structured interviews that use the same questions for every candidate. This speeds up scoring and comparison, reduces interviewer preparation time, and produces fairer outcomes. Set a decision deadline before the process starts: agree that debrief will happen within 24 hours of the final interview and that an offer will be made within 48 hours of a positive debrief.
