Getting Started with People Analytics: A Practical First Steps Guide

MAY 27, 2026

You do not need a dedicated analytics team or a data science degree to start using people data strategically. Here is how any HR team can begin.

Start with a question, not a dashboard

The most common mistake in beginning a people analytics journey is starting with the data: building a comprehensive dashboard of every metric available in the HRIS and then looking for insights. This produces noise rather than signal. Start instead with a specific business question that HR needs to answer: why is voluntary turnover higher in the operations team than in the sales team? Which new hires become high performers? Do employees who receive recognition more frequently take less sick leave? Business questions direct your attention to the data that matters and make your analysis immediately relevant.

Build your data foundation first

Before you can analyse anything reliably, your HRIS data must be clean and consistent. This means: all employees in the correct department and cost centre, job titles consistently applied across the organisation, manager assignments up to date after every restructure, and leave and absence records maintained in real time. Run a data quality audit: pick five of the most commonly used data fields and check their accuracy for a random sample of 50 employee records. The results will almost always reveal gaps that need to be addressed before you can trust your analysis.
