6 Onboarding Metrics Every HR Team Should Track
MAY 4, 2026
If you are not measuring your onboarding process, you cannot improve it. Here are the six metrics that tell you what is actually happening.
The metrics that predict success
The six most valuable onboarding metrics are: 90-day retention rate (what percentage of new hires are still employed at 90 days?), time to productivity (how long before a new hire is performing at the expected level for their role?), new hire engagement score at 30 and 90 days (are they feeling welcomed and integrated?), onboarding task completion rate (what percentage of assigned tasks are completed by the due date?), manager satisfaction with new hire readiness (do managers feel the new hire was adequately prepared?), and new hire satisfaction with the onboarding experience.
How to collect and use the data
The simplest way to collect onboarding metrics is a survey at 30 and 90 days. Keep it to five questions covering connection, clarity of role, adequacy of tools and training, quality of manager support, and overall satisfaction. Feed the data into your HRIS alongside task completion rates, which the system can track automatically. Review the data monthly and share it with hiring managers so they can see how their teams compare. Use the data to identify specific breakdown points in the onboarding process and redesign those steps before the next cohort arrives.
