Onboarding International Hires: What HR Needs to Do Differently
MAR 8, 2026
When a new hire is relocating from another country, the onboarding process must address legal, practical, and cultural dimensions that do not arise for local hires.
The legal and administrative dimension
International hires require additional right-to-work verification, which for employees moving to the UK from outside the EEA includes checking the relevant visa or immigration status and understanding the conditions attached to it. Ensure your HR team is trained on the specific document requirements for the visa categories most common in your workforce, and that you have a clear process for checking and recording expiry dates. For hires who need a visa sponsorship, your organisation must hold a valid Sponsor Licence and follow the Home Office's record-keeping requirements.
The practical and cultural dimension
International hires may need support beyond the typical onboarding scope: guidance on opening a UK bank account, registering with a GP, understanding the National Insurance and tax system, and navigating the local area if they have relocated. Consider partnering with a relocation service for senior or specialist hires. On the cultural side, brief the new hire's team on the differences in working culture they may encounter and prepare the new hire for any UK-specific norms around communication style, hierarchy, and meeting conduct that may differ from their previous experience.
