Everything You Need to Know About Employee Assistance Programmes
MAR 25, 2026
An Employee Assistance Programme is one of the highest-return wellbeing benefits you can offer. Here is how to implement and promote it effectively.
What an EAP provides
An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a confidential support service, funded by the employer, that provides employees with access to short-term counselling, mental health support, legal advice, financial guidance, and practical help with personal challenges such as bereavement, relationship difficulties, and caring responsibilities. Most EAPs are delivered through a 24-hour telephone helpline and online platform, with face-to-face or video counselling sessions available for those who need more sustained support. Coverage typically extends to immediate family members.
The utilisation problem
The most common EAP failure mode is not poor service quality but low awareness. Research consistently finds that 20-30% of employees do not know their employer offers an EAP, and a significant further proportion are unsure how to access it. The result is that employees who would benefit from the service do not use it, and the employer pays for a resource that goes largely untapped. The solution is not a single launch communication but an ongoing programme of promotion: inclusion in onboarding, regular mentions in all-staff communications, prominent placement on the intranet, and proactive promotion by managers during difficult periods.
How to measure EAP effectiveness
Track utilisation rate (the percentage of employees who use the service in a given year, typically 5-15% is considered healthy), the categories of support accessed (which reveals the nature of employee stress), and employee satisfaction with the service through post-contact surveys. Compare absence rates and engagement scores before and after EAP implementation and promotion campaigns. Present utilisation and outcome data to senior leadership quarterly: it demonstrates the value of the investment and sustains executive support for the programme.
