The Employer's Guide to Earned Wage Access

JUN 11, 2026

Earned wage access lets employees draw on pay they have already earned before payday. Here is what HR needs to know before offering it.

What earned wage access is

Earned wage access (EWA), also called on-demand pay, allows employees to access a portion of their net earned wages before the regular payday, typically for a small transaction fee paid by the employee or employer. It differs from a payday loan because the employee is accessing money they have already earned, not borrowing against future earnings. EWA products are offered either through the payroll provider or via a third-party platform that integrates with the employer's payroll system.

Why employees value it

A significant proportion of the UK workforce lives paycheck to paycheck, with limited ability to absorb unexpected expenses between pay dates. The most common uses of EWA withdrawals are car repairs, utility bills, medical expenses, and avoiding overdraft charges. Research from CIPD and others has found that financial stress is one of the most significant contributors to poor concentration, absenteeism, and presenteeism at work. EWA is one of the lowest-cost financial wellbeing benefits an employer can offer.

Implementation considerations for HR

Before offering EWA, clarify the regulatory position. The Financial Conduct Authority has been reviewing EWA products; ensure any provider you select is compliant with evolving guidance. Confirm how the product integrates with your payroll cycle: most providers reconcile advances against the normal payroll run, which should be transparent to your payroll team. Set a cap on the proportion of earned wages that can be accessed early, typically 50%, to avoid employees drawing down their entire net pay before payday.
