Cultural Onboarding: How to Help New Hires Understand Your Culture
APR 27, 2026
Technical onboarding teaches people how to do the job. Cultural onboarding teaches them how to do it here. Here is how to make it deliberate.
What cultural onboarding is
Cultural onboarding helps new employees understand the unwritten rules of your organisation: how decisions are made, how disagreement is handled, what communication style is expected, which norms are sacred and which are flexible, and what the organisation genuinely values beyond its stated mission. Without this, new hires spend months learning by trial and error, sometimes making mistakes that damage early relationships and career trajectories that could have been avoided with explicit guidance.
How to make it explicit
Write a culture guide that goes beyond your values statement to describe specific behaviours. Pair every new hire with a culturally savvy buddy whose explicit role is to translate unwritten norms. Include cultural scenarios in manager-led onboarding conversations: 'Here is how we handled a disagreement in our last team meeting: what do you notice about the approach?' Run a structured new-hire forum at 90 days where recent joiners share what surprised them about the culture: this surfaces the gaps between what you think you communicate and what people actually experience.
